Is a headset microphone right for you?
From gym instructor to pastor to rock star, these professionals and others often use head-worn microphones. Britney Spears and Madonna are among frequently mentioned entertainers using headsets among the “older set” (me); a star I’ve actually been around, Garth Brooks, made the Crown version very famous back in the ‘90’s. (BTW, depending on applications, headsets may be wired or wireless.)
My kids run around our showroom @ Midwest Sound and Lighting with remnants of wireless Samson headset mics (remnants meaning “used to work”) that were trashed by aerobics gym instructors… a punishing application for any headset!
Pastors and others are concerned how these headsets might look against their skin and how comfortable they are to use but the benefits of using head-worn microphones are the same for all users; they need their voices heard and their hands free. Aircraft pilots use headsets exclusively (generally wired models). I recall my only helicopter ride and feeling quite awesome putting on a set of high-end David Clark ‘phones. I also remember being a lighting operator and actually saying something relevant into a headset intercom in a major stage production; very cool! Our production team at Midwest Sound and Lighting typically employs either wired or wireless intercom headsets as needed.
Computer users also take advantage of headset mics, since all voice recognition software needs a voice (preferably yours) to recognize and obey…
It is common for new users to think that headset mics are the answer. However, a headset mic can be very uncomfortable at first and make you look like you really need to say something useful…do you? Talk about immediate status; a head-worn mic is a guaranteed conversation starter!
